You Should Love It Because…
It is so simply fascinating. It is a winner of the Caldecott medal, which means it is highly valued for the illustrations. In its simplicity of both word and picture, it stimulates imagination. The story opens with an empty track and proceeds to fill the track with an entire freight train. The reader is taken on a journey, all the while learning about colors, train cars, and how a train moves.
Classroom Connection
The lesson plan written for this book is adaptable for both homeschooling and the mainstream classroom. It includes three extension activities covering a variety of objectives from fine motor skills to categorizing. The lesson is aligned to Common Core, with standards listed at the end. The 5-page lesson plan can be found at my store.

Thanks, Cameron! I’ll be working on more books and lesson plans this summer, so you will have more resources when the school year picks back up.
